How to Test Microcracks in Hard Chrome Plated Sample

Q. We want to know how to test the microcracks per inches on Hard Chrome plated sample i.e whether we need to test on plated surface by magnification or we need to test in cross sectioned sample.

A. Your best bet would be a 400-500X magnification, photo-micrograph of cross section of plating layer. For best results, allow for a chromium thickness of at least 0.002 mills to allow sufficient room for the crack pattern to be observed in the cross section.

Best of luck.
